Book Review - Binary Stars by Karon Meakin

Binary Stars cover
Ever wondered what it is astrologically that makes a marriage (or partnership) long lasting whilst others fall by the wayside? Well so did Karon, so to this end she set about researching several hundred charts of couples, both happily married and divorced. The first volume of her results looks to the position of Juno and Jupiter, in natal and in wedding charts. As Karon herself says of these two planets:

"Jupiter and Juno offer a wonderful early model of getting it wrong; between them they symbolise the two extremes of giving up everything and surrendering  nothing for the partnership."

In this first volume Karon gives example charts of some well known relationships along with insightful commentary based on her studies. She looks at Jupiter and Jupiter ruler in both natal and wedding charts, as well as Juno's position in wedding charts.

This is a book with clearly presented and insightful information. It's one that you can read from cover to cover or just dip in and out of, maybe just to read those sections you feel are relevant to you.

Read this book if you are in any kind of partnership, whether you are contented or not. Use it as a guideline as to how to avoid pitfalls in current or future relationships, read it as a good example of an astrology text book, whatever the reason, read it!

You can read more about, (or buy,) Karon's book on her website.

Eclipses and Mercury Retrograde Periods 2014

The following is a resource for astrologer's with just a few notes from me. I haven't done a full interpretation of the eclipse charts, what I have done is just typed a few notes as to what "hit me" in each chart.

Eclipses have always been seen as a powerful omen in both astrology and Folklore. They are significators of dramatic events. Used primarily in mundane astrology (mundane – used to predict world affairs and events) the effects are said to be more noticeable in the areas of the world where the eclipse is visible. They can also have an effect on Natal astrology if the eclipse aspects a natal planet within 1 or 2 degrees.

The following times and charts are all calculated for the UK, using Westminster coordinates.

Eclipse Charts 2014

Total Lunar Eclipse (Full Moon)
15 Apr 2014 07:42:16 UT ( 08:42:16 BST) Position: 25°Li15'
Visibility: West in Asia, East in North America, Parts of South America

Lunatr eclipse 15 April
Mercury Uranus conjunction would indicate some unexpected news, not that this conjunction is in a wide grand cross involving Jupiter, Pluto. Mars is weakened by being in fall whereas Jupiter is in exaltation – so possible good news will outweigh the bad

Solar Annular Eclipse (New Moon)
29 Apr 2014 06:14:19 UT (07:14:19 BST)
Position: 08°Ta51'
Visibility: South in Asia, Australia, Pacific, Indian Ocean, Antarctica

Solar Eclipse 29 April

The Grand Cross is still in force in the Solar eclipse chart, minus Mercury. The eclipse itself is hidden away in the 12th house, maybe signifying events linked to big institutions. Being in an earth sign this eclipse could also trigger off earthquakes.

This Eclipse is Saros No 16 South. The following is from  Predictive Astrology: The Eagle and the Lark by Bernadette Brady
Under the influence of this family of eclipses, individuals will find themselves dealing with issues of wasted energy or misdirected motivation, particularly when dealing with groups. There can be sudden inspiration but this is potentially unfulfilling. No real action should be taken

Total Lunar Eclipse (Full Moon)
8 Oct 2014 10:50:34 UT (11:50:34 BST)
Position: 15°Aries05'
Visibility: West in Asia, West in Australia, Parts of North America, East in South America

Lunar Eclipse 8 October
No grand cross in this chart though there is a T-square involving Sun and Venus at one end , the Moon and Uranus on the other side, both squaring Pluto. There is a lot of unrest signified here, so we may see more protests around this time.

Solar Partial Eclipse (NM)
23 Oct 2014 21:56:38 UT (22:56:38)
Position: 00°Scorpio24'

Visibility: East in Asia, Much of North America, Pacific, Atlantic

Solar Eclipse 23 Oct
This final eclipse of the year has Venus at the same degree as the sun and the moon, the first thing that sprang to my mind is that a woman is going to be "eclipsed"(The Queen has sun at 0° Taurus.) There could also be some sort of unrest in the international money market.

This Eclipse is Saros No: 17 From Predictive Astrology: The Eagle and the Lark by Bernadette Brady
New North This Series brings an impulsive energy to events. Socializing becomes hectic and issues emerge that motivate the individual. This motivation may be concerned with financial projects or relationship issues. Whatever the motivation, it is impulsive, passionate and exciting. Have fun, enjoy it.

Mercury Retrograde Periods

Just a heads up as to when Murphy’s law will be in effect, if it’s mechanical or electronic remember it could go wrong during the Mercury Retrograde periods. Also watch out for misunderstandings, communication mix-ups and delayed messages.

7th February 3° Pisces 18' to 2nd March 18° Aquarius 21'
7th June 3° Cancer 10' to 2nd July 24° Gemini25'
5th Oct 2°Scorpio17' to 26 Oct 16°Libra 48'

Final thoughts

New Moon Jan 1st

Much has already been written about 2014 starting off with a New Moon. The chart is here for anyone who wants to take look for themselves. As you can see the New Moon is conjunct Pluto and Mercury, and squaring Mars. I don't think this is the best start to the New Year. Something is bubbling away beneath the surface... time will tell.

Addendum 1st January 2014
Could this story from The Guardian be what's bubbling away beneath the surface?
This transatlantic trade deal is a full-frontal assault on democracy Or is there yet more.....?
